After the successful Incheon landing operation of the South Korean and Allied forces, which had been pushed down to the Nakdong River front during the Korean War, the North Korean army completely fortified and strongly defended the area around Hill 104 in Yeonhui-dong as the last line of defense for Seoul. Accordingly, the Korean Marine Corps, who crossed the Han River, launched an attack on September 21, 1950, repelled the enemy after a fierce hand-to-hand combat, and recaptured Hill 104, hoisting the Taegeukgi at the Central Office, which contributed decisively to recapturing the capital, Seoul. In this fierce battlefield, this hill was recaptured after three days of endless fighting day and night, with only 26 men from one company surviving. This monument was erected at the end of Gungdongsan Mountain in Yeonhui-dong, Seodaemun-gu to commemorate the souls of the young Marines who died heroically during the operation to recapture the capital, Seoul.
