Tamnara Republic is a mini-state of South Korea located in Geumak-ri, Hallim-eup, Jeju Island. Tamnara Republic, which has created a forest by planting trees on stony ground where there were neither trees nor water, and is creating a success story in a wasteland with over 80 rainwater ponds, is a hidden treasure of Jeju visited by travelers from over 70 countries at home and abroad. To visit this place, you must make a reservation and obtain a passport, and the staff who created the site will give you a story tour. There is the Lao Tzu Art Museum, which creates something from nothing, creates a path, and connects the Tao Te Ching. It is also famous for its used book library, which stores 300,000 used books discarded across the country. Ceramics and crafts are made by melting Jeju's volcanic stones, and you can experience it yourself on site. There is also a pottery experience mixing stone powder and clay, a melting pot experience melting lava, and a scarf making experience dyeing fabric.
This space, created by Kang Woo-hyun, who created Naminara Republic on Nami Island in Chuncheon, settled in Jeju in 2014, is also known as a ‘traveler’s travel destination’ where anyone can plant trees or grow vegetables. Of the 20,000 trees that turned the wasteland into a forest, more than 15,000 were planted by local residents and visitors. There are many paths in Tamnara Republic, which are good for those who enjoy their own time in nature, spirit, and culture. You can also walk along the Gotjawal Forest Trail in the back and experience a wellness program that combines meditation and breathing, where nature and your body become one.
