도동서원은 1568년 비슬산 동쪽 기슭에 유학자들이 처음 건립했으나 임진왜란 때 소실됐다. 1605년에 현재의 자리에 학교를 재건하고 보로동서원으로 이름을 바꾸었다. 1607년에 동도서원으로 이름이 바뀌었다. '동도'는 유교의 가르침('도')이 동양(한국어로는 동)에서 왔다는 뜻입니다. 도동서원은 흥선대원군의 서원 철폐 명령에도 영향을 받지 않은 47개 주요 서원 중 하나이다.
