月峰书院建于1578年，是由金桂辉等儒家学者通过望泉寺纪念奇大升的学问和德行而建立的。 1646年，学堂迁至现址，1654年孝宗赐名“月峰”。1671年，在宋时烈的建议下，白相、白顺的神社从德山寺迁移。另外，1673年又增设了金长生、金知的祠堂。不幸的是，由于1868年大院君的废除政策，儒学院被废除。后来，1938年全罗南道的儒生们建造了丙月堂，随后又建立了古直祠。 1972年，长板阁和外三门，1978年，秀，1980年，内三门，1981年。丙月堂被指定为光州第9号纪念碑，长板阁内保存着高峰志的木版画。
