玉山书院是为了纪念儒家学者李彦积（1491-1553）的学术成就和美德而建立的。始建于1572年，即宣祖5年，次年改名为现名。它是兴宣大院君颁布的书院废止令中排除的47所书院之一。虽然建筑结构在建筑方面没有重大意义，但建筑物独特的空间布局却很难被忽视。独乐堂位于玉山书院以北700米处，是李彦积的度假别馆和自习室。
