北汉山城始建于 132 年盖鲁王统治下的百济时代（公元前 18 年至公元 660 年），是保护百济免受高句丽军队侵害的最北端堡垒。公元475年，经过一场激战，这座堡垒落入高句丽手中。结果盖鲁王被杀，百济公主逃往熊津城。尽管堡垒倒塌和重建，北汉山城在整个韩国战争史上继续发挥着保护首都的重要作用。
