Gallery Seoul Museum of Art Artist Chun Kyung-ja
Description of art Chun Kyung-ja established a unique style of the traditional chaesaekhwa [oriental color painting]. While chaesaekhwa comprises the majority of her best-known paintings, Chun also created many travel paintings, ink and color wash paintings, illustrations, and drawings. Although Chun mostly focused on chaesaekhwa paintings, she also experimented with various forms that broke free from traditionalism. Chun also had a penchant for incorporating realistic details in her drawings. During her studies at Women’s School of Fine Arts, Tokyo, Chun honed her ability to capture the details of the subject, sketching even the fuzz on flower stems. Chun based her paintings on sketches that incorporate the details of her close observations. She would either paint directly over the sketches or borrow elements from several drawings to compose an entirely new image. The brilliant colors of Chun's works also came from her delicate and deliberate efforts to select a color scheme. The memos on colors left on Chun's sketches shed light on such deliberate planning of color schemes. Chun’s sketches continue to serve as fascinating resources to her studies preceding each painting. (year unknown) are speculated to be Chun’s nude sketches drawn at Paris Goetz Academy produced during her studies in Paris in 1969. In Paris, following her time in New York, Chun realized the limitations in the expressability of oriental painting materials. Chun thus felt a dire need to use the more manageable oil paint of western art while retaining the oriental spirit in her work. As such, Chun decided to study oil painting in Paris before returning to Korea. In the mornings, Chun painted in the hotel using oriental painting materials, while in the afternoons she studied oil painting at Goetz Academy in Montparnasse, Paris. Upon her return to Korea, Chun revealed that the five nude paintings and nearly a hundred nude sketches were some of her most delightful achievements from her sojourn. The nude sketches feature a variety of poses with powerful lines and precise depiction of the anatomical bone structure and muscles, clearly demonstrating Chun’s ability to instantly capture the characteristics of the skeletal structure. Chun sharpened such ability to meticulously depict details based on close observation during her studies in Tokyo. Although this was her first experience with drawing nudes of Caucasian women, Chun was not particularly moved. Instead, she wanted to return to Seoul and draw in her own style.
