Description of art | In “Landscape 1” (1980), a photomontage by Shin Hakchul, the images collected by Shin are piled up as in a landfill, forming a gigantic mass under the dark, bloodtinged sky. The chunk of images forming a sort of background mainly consists of scenes of the masses demonstrating, whereas the foreground is filled with images of products that might appear on the advertising pages of magazines. Toward the center of the canvas, an arm holding a knife pokes out with a threatening air. Through this composition, Shin is raising alarm at the deluge of images promoting mass consumer culture. The arms sticking up here and there represent the masses buried under piles of images, whereas the hotair balloon faraway up in the sky symbolizes freedom. This work conveys a clear message that we can have freedom and hope only if we practice critical thinking and stand firm as a people, refusing to surrender to mass consumer culture. | ||||||
