Description of art A drawing installation “DPRK: North Korea Reflected upon from Without” (2011), created by collaboration of the two artists Jo Donghwan and Jo Haejun, features unique content and form. The drawing is based on the oral statement about experiences of Helga Picht, the Professor Emeritus of Korean Studies at Humboldt-Universitat in Berlin, who had been an East Germany resident and studied in North Korea. This installation offers a significant perspective by visualizing experiences testified by a foreigner studying abroad, not by defectors from North Korea. Her testimony was written based on her memories few decades after German unification, but the content is not unfamiliar to us. As such, the work reveals the appalling reality of North Korean life so vividly that no one can believe the drawings were based on the foreigner’s eyewitness testimony.
