Description of art Debuted at his solo exhibition “Mulian, Mulian” (2011) at Atelier Hermes, “Jataka Mirrors (Mirrors of Previous Birth)” is an installation work in which twelve red mirrors are attached in succession. In this exhibition, the images of the nether world in Mulian (Ullambana) Sutra are represented by him captivated with the story in the sutra. The story is about Maudgalyayana, a follower of Buddha, who managed to deliver his mother who had fallen in hell because of her sin. “Jataka Mirrors (Mirrors of Previous Birth)” combines “Jataka paintings,” the depiction of Buddha’s previous lives, with “Mirror of Karma,” that reflects sins of sinners fallen in hell. This approach makes viewers contemplate their previous lives and “karma” through the reflected images on the mirrors. Twelve mirrors with all different dimensions are designed by borrowing the dimensions of screens that have been used in cinema for the last century. Rho explained that “I identify mirrors with cinema screens in concepts. Ultimately, humans are supposed to reflect what they think and feel on the screens in their minds.”
