Description of art In his early work “The Black Scud” (2000), reminiscent of a Sci-Fi animated film, Ryu creates a virtual, psychological space to express how individuals feel about collectivism in Korean society. The simmering sun in the sky symbolizes a masculine and male-centered social structure, and multiple individuals, who obviously belong to the society, are running in place, heavily breathing, as if to run from the sun. But they fail to escape from the stifling space and are stuck behind the barbed wire in the end. The collective acts in uniformity and the repetitive sound of running and dogs barking represent the inner state of individuals confined in a standardized collectivist culture.
