Description of art | “c + c” (2009) shows Hong’s signature style?true to the basics yet open to the possibility of free variation. As can be inferred from the title “c + c,” meaning “controlled chaos,” this work comprises of densely tangled plastic hoses laid out impromptu and at random, on a framework produced by meticulous calculation. Literally, absolute control and utter chaos coexist in one work that is the result of Hong’s completely manual labor. Without relying on machines in any part of the process, he made the framework by whittling and connecting wood and then attached and glued plastic hoses and wires on them only with his bare hands. Such complicated processes and extreme physical labor yielding such a simple form, “c + c” seems to hint at the uselessness of art. Hong, however, ironically obtains unique originality?a merit of manual work?by actively adopting the variables in the work process and consequent transformations. Presenting such a paradox through the gap between the visible and invisible is the most basic meaning of Hong’s art. | ||||||
