Description of art “The Meaning of 1/24 Second” (1969), Korea’s first experimental film, shows daily life in the city through the eyes of the unemployed. The 16mm film, edited in color and black and white, consists of hundreds of unrelated scene cuts accompanied by a clicking sound every second. Taking the basic principle of a film in which there are 24 frames per second, Kim expressed the harsh reality of modern city dwellers and the sense of alienation caused by this uncontrollable speed. This piece was created in 1969 but the original was lost after its first public screening at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, currently MMCA, in 2001. The piece was then restored to a 16mm film from the digital version that remained, and was re-screened at the retrospective exhibition “SeMA Green, Kim Ku-lim: Like You Know It All” held at the Seoul Museum of Art, SeMA in 2013. In 2015, the film was screened at the Tate Modern Star Auditorium, London and elicited a favorable response from contemporary viewers.
