Description of art | His recent projects have evolved in scale, changing from representing machine creatures to embracing the environment, history, and social contexts surrounding the machines. “Unicus?Cavum ad initium” (2011), as an extension of “Custos Cavum” (2011), featuring one of his major themes, is based on a fictional scenario about the start of a world that Choe has envisioned since 2006. In his scenario, there are two worlds connected by countless small holes, and “Custos Cavum” serves as a guardian to prevent these holes from being blocked. “Unicus,” a spore with wings, grows out of these guardians and endlessly multiplies as new Custos Cavum to preserve the ecosystem. As the title indicates, “Unicus-Cavum ad initium” represents a cavum in the beginning, that is, unicus as the archetype of cavum. As viewers approach the work, a sensor triggers the flexible movements of the spores that resemble the flapping of wings. This work awakens the imagination of the world at its beginning, which has faded into oblivion among people who are accustomed to civilization, along with the possibility of communication and co-existence with a completely different world. | ||||||
