Description of art | 〈Wildflowers (1)〉(1999) is a work depicting unknown wildflowers on the route to the artist’s studio when Min Joung-Ki lived in Seohu-ri. While staying in Seohu-ri for about 20 years, Min was able to feel simple joy in the trivial things that caught his eyes, and these wildflowers were one of them. Choi Min’s essay was featured in the brochure of Min’s solo exhibition. According to Choi, “Min Joung-Ki tries to find a piece of the cosmic order in small and modest wildflowers like traditional Korean literati painters (muninhwaga) who painted bugs and flowers.” And then he added, “This would be an extension of his previous interest in barbershop paintings (a mass-produced, low-quality painting that could be hung in a barber's shop).” It is a work that shows the artist’s interest in paying attention to hidden, trivial and alienated things and seeing nature as a foundation of life, not as a spiritual refuge, or a subject of contemplation or appreciation. | ||||||
