Description of art 〈2004 Floating Island Series〉 contains natural sceneries photographed by Kim Young Soo while traveling to about 80 islands around the coast of Namdo in South Korea from 1997 to 2004. He was engaged in the portrait photography project for the elderly since the late 1990s, whose main target was underprivileged people in mountainous areas and islands without photo studios. Thus, Kim could capture various scenes while walking around regions for the project. For instance, he took a shot of a ship that would carry him to the island, a cabin in the ship, and the gap in time between entering the island, taking portraits, and getting back on the ship. Kim photographed in a flexible manner what was visible in front of him, including ships crossing the sea, waves hitting the rock, the sea, seagulls, raindrops falling down the cabin window, and sceneries of the island. Art critic Choi Min claimed that 〈Floating Island Series〉 shows Kim Young Soo as a floating artist who “unconsciously identifies himself with the island.” According to Choi, his photos are like “ghosts whom we encounter in a paradoxical situation, in which a soul who cannot settle anywhere looks for a hometown that does not exist anywhere.”
