Seongsan Ilchulbong, which is 180 meters above sea level, is a volcanic body that exploded underwater about 5,000 years ago, which is rare among Jeju Island's numerous craters. The explosion that occurs when lava mixes with water breaks the lava into fine volcanic ash, which is piled up in a cone around the crater. It was originally a volcanic island, but sand and gravel piled up between the island and the land near Shinyang Beach, connecting it to the mainland. At the top of Ilchulbong, there is a crater with a diameter of 600m, a floor height of 90m above sea level, and an area of 214,400㎡ (the area of the Seongsan Ilchulbong crater). A scene from director Lee Jang-ho's movie 'The Foreign Team of Fear' was also filmed here. It used to be farming, but now it looks like a field of silver grass and Udo Island is within reach. Since ancient times, the sunrise view seen from the top of Seongsan Ilchulbong Peak has been said to be the best among the 10 scenic spots in Yeongju (Jeju's scenic spots). The sunrise rising flaming from the horizon beyond the flowing blue sea colors the entire sea, captures the hearts of those who see it, and makes them admire it. It is managed as a local monument and was designated as a natural monument on July 19, 2000.
