Naeyeonsan Mountain, considered one of the Eight Scenic Views of Gyeongbuk, is a place where 12 waterfalls of various shapes develop along a valley spanning approximately 14 km. It is rare for multiple waterfalls like this to develop in one valley. In particular, Mupung, Gwaneum, and Yeonsan Waterfalls (5th to 7th waterfalls) are magnificently developed in a place surrounded by strangely shaped cliffs like a folding screen, and became the background for ‘Naeyeon Samyongchudo (內延三龍湫圖)’ painted by Gyeomjae Jeongseon.
The rocks of Naeyeonsan Mountain are all made of solidified volcanic ash, and the various waterfalls here were formed under the influence of cracks that developed in these rocks. Cracks in rocks are created when rocks break under force in a certain direction, and most of them are vertical or horizontal. When rocks fall in the form of blocks along these gaps, a cliff- or step-shaped terrain is created, and when water flows over them, various types of waterfalls can be created.
Waterfalls also create various other landforms. Pokho, a water pool beneath the waterfall, was created by hollowing out the rock beneath the waterfall due to the falling water. Additionally, Gwaneumgul Cave, a unique cave developed behind a waterfall, was created when the rock weakened by water seeping into the cracks of the rock wall was carved out.
