It was built in 1983 to commemorate the noble intentions and souls of patriots who died during the independence movement on Yeonghae Market Day on March 18, 1918, and to use it as an educational center to cultivate the spirit of national salvation in future generations. If you follow National Highway No. 7, you will find the March 1 Memorial Tower on the south and west sides of the entrance to Yeonghae-myeon, which was built to honor the spirits of the martyrs. This pagoda commemorates the spirit of the doctors and martyrs who, on the market day of March 18, 1919 (February 19 in the lunar calendar), tens of thousands of people from Chuksan, Byeonggok, and Changsu-myeon, centered around Yeonghae, protested against Japanese colonial rule and shouted for independence, risking their lives. To commemorate this, the groundbreaking ceremony in March 1983 was expanded and the unveiling ceremony was held in November 1983, and the Independence Movement Day event was held on March 1 to commemorate the patriotic spirit of many ancestors in Yeonghae-myeon.
