这座著名的广场从前全罗南道省政府办公厅一直延伸到锦南路地区，是具有里程碑意义的 5 月 18 日民主起义的发生地。 1980年5月，全罗南道政府办公楼是公民抵抗运动的总部，也是多次集会的场所。自1996年以来，该广场被正式称为“5月18日民主广场”。
