왕궁오층석탑은 마한시대 국가의 수도였던 것으로 추정되는 익산 왕궁면에서 남쪽으로 약 2km 떨어진 언덕에 위치해 있다. 높이 8.5m로 국보 제289호로 지정되어 있다. 탑 내부에서 출토된 고려시대 유물은 국보 제123호로 현재 국립중앙박물관에 소장되어 있다. 발굴된 유물 중에서 가장 유명한 것은; 부처님의 사리를 담은 웅장한 그릇인 사리장검구; 연꽃 모양의 마개를 얹은 녹색 유리 사리병; 금강경 19장의 금판이 담긴 숭금강경판.
