五頭山城圍繞著五頭山的戰略山頂而建。城牆長約 620 米，建於百濟王朝時期。城池建於五頭山山頂（119公尺）臨津江與漢江的交會處。山勢陡峭，山頂散落著修築城牆的石頭。這些散落的石頭證明了該城在三國時代和朝鮮王朝曾多次修繕，因為這些石頭顯然是被開採出來並用於修補城牆的。發掘工作中發現了大量陶器、白瓷、瓷磚和鐵箭頭。從地形上看，要塞坐落在一個主要的戰略交匯處，統一觀測站也坐落在那裡。該城是百濟王朝防禦工事和建築研究的重要對象。廣開土王碑、三國史、百濟本紀、大同地圖都記載了這座城池是百濟的官美城池，吸引了許多學者和研究人員的注意。
