1920년 우리나라 최초로 발굴된 유적은 김해시 봉황동 유적이다. 이 유적에는 가야시대의 중요한 패총과 금관가야 지역 최대의 고분인 봉황대 고분이 있다. 이러한 중요한 발견으로 인해 2001년 2월 5일 사적 제2호로 지정되었다. 언덕 위에는 황세장군과 여의장군 전설이 전해지는 여의장자와 황세바위가 남아 있다.
