The March 1st Movement of 1919 served as an opportunity to clearly reveal the status of Protestantism in the Korean nationalist movement. Protestantism played a leading role in the March 1st Movement along with Cheondogyo and Buddhism, and many of the large and small demonstrations for national independence that took place across the country were led by Protestant believers. There was a lot of damage caused by Japan's merciless oppression, and a representative example of this is Jeam-ri Church in Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do. On the afternoon of April 15, 1919, the Japanese police gathered believers at Jeam-ri Church, closed the gates, set fire to the church, and shot indiscriminately, killing 23 people. This was a merciless retaliation against Jeamri Church, which played a leading role in the independence movement that took place in the Balan area on April 5. Jeam-ri Church, which was established in August 1905 under the leadership of Ahn Jong-hu, the head of Jeam-ri, had an unusually strong sense of unity due to its characteristics as a compatriot village, and this characteristic was still evident during the March 1st Movement.

The Japanese police Then, they burned about 30 houses in Jeam-ri and killed six Cheondogyo believers in Goju-ri, 500 meters away, and burned their bodies. It is said that due to this atrocity, the smell and smoke of burning people, houses, livestock, clothing, and grain spread in the Jeam-ri area that day, as far as 10 km away. After the Jeam-ri Church massacre occurred, believers and the general public did not dare to approach the scene of the incident due to Japanese surveillance. In the end, the victims' bodies were left abandoned until Dr. Schofield, a Canadian medical missionary who heard about the incident, collected the remains from the burned church a few days later and buried them at the entrance to a nearby cemetery. Jeam-ri Church was relocated and rebuilt in July 1919, and a tile-roofed chapel was built at its current location in 1938, but the truth behind the massacre had to wait until after liberation. In April 1959, the [March 1st Movement Memorial Monument] with President Syngman Rhee's handwriting was erected at the scene of the incident, and in September 1970, the New Church was founded with a donation of 10 million yen sent by Japanese Christians and social groups as an expression of atonement. A bereaved family hall was built. In addition, in September 1982, the government conducted a large-scale excavation of the remains and they were buried in a graveyard next to the church, and a memorial hall and a new memorial tower were built in July of the following year.
